Aldon’s Story

It’s been a few years since the football world heard the name Aldon Smith. Once one of the best defensive players in the NFL, Smith saw his career derailed by off-the-field issues, including substance abuse and legal trouble that ultimately led to jail time.

Aldon has spent the last three years writing a redemption story bigger than ball. After turning his life around, Aldon declined an invite to return to the NFL. He found greater purpose in making his mess his message – sharing his struggles, come-ups, and every human moment in-between.

“It’s all about resilience, mental health, and finding your own path,” said Aldon, whose new platform “Intelligent Movement” represents the idea that we will always be a work in progress.

In a full circle story, Smith will be returning to his NFL roots, not as a player, but as a mentor to the 2024 rookie class – starting with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders. Smith will have intimate conversations with players, leaning into the most vulnerable parts of his story with the hopes of helping just one athlete avoid a hiccup that could negatively impact their career. He aims to be someone they can speak openly with – not as HR personnel or a coach, but as an ally who has walked in their shoes.

Smith’s rapid rise as a household name exposed him to the dark side of living a luxury lifestyle. He hopes to guide new players through the early years as they navigate life on and off the field through a 360° program for players and staff – encompassing team support, 1:1 coaching, post-career success and more.

Program Introduction

Former NFL star Aldon Smith launched Intelligent Movement tailored for NFL rookies after experiencing a gap in support throughout his own journey into the league. The initiative aims to provide guidance to young athletes as they navigate their rise into professional football.

“I look forward to speaking with rookies and sharing my story,” said Smith. “Life has been filled with ups and downs, both on and off the field… a turbulent upbringing, abuse, accusations… you name it. I see players for who they are… the human behind the helmet.”

Turning his personal adversity into an advantage for the next generation of players, Smith will combine his life experience with his time working as a sponsor and speaker at a recovery center to help players avoid missteps that could have changed the course of Smith’s career. Intelligent Movement offers intimate speaking engagements with the 2024-2025 rookie class, as well as 1:1 guidance. Topics range from navigating a rapid rise to fame, making intelligent choices, facilitating player care solutions for mental health and more.

“Most of the guys will be able to relate with parts of my past,” said Smith. “I want to be a resource that players feel like they can speak to about things that they wouldn’t necessarily share with team personnel.”
